Hernandez Leaves Halcon Avenida

The drama-filled 2008-09 campaign of Halcon Avenida proved to be the last with the Salamanca outfit for Jose Ignacio Hernandez with the long-time coach announcing he has accepted a job elsewhere.

Hernandez led Avenida to their finest hour in Europe this year as they  reached the final of the EuroLeague Women before losing to Spartak Moscow Region.

Avenida then booked a spot in the Liga Femenina play-off finals but fell to rivals Ros Casares.

Hernandez, who is  leaving despite having one-year remaining on his contract, said in a statement: "I never thought I would give such an announcement but life has many turns.

"I want to announce that I have taken the most difficult decision in my sporting career, the most difficult decision in more than 20 years dedicated to women basketball, the majority of them in this club.

"I have received a very important offer from a foreign club, a club that wants to be big in Europe and that is pointing on me to lead their project.

"This opportunity could be unique and hence, it's difficult to say no to it. I hope everyone understands it.

"This is not a good-bye, I hope it's a see you later, because I would like to return to Salamanca, my home, my people and my club."

His destination is unknown although there is media speculation that he is to join another  EuroLeague Women side in Poland, Wisla Can-Pack Krakow.
