UMMC Edge Spartak To Clinch Russian Title

29.04.2009

UMMC Ekaterinburg suffered a painful defeat to Spartak Moscow Region in the EuroLeague Women Final but they finished the season on a high by defeating their nemesis to the Russian title.

Gundars Vetra's team, riding the home-court advantage they securedĀ  by finishing the regular season in first place, stormed into a big half-time lead but then had to hold on for dear life before beating Spartak 70-68.

UMMC looked to be cruising to a huge victory at half-time after opening up a 48-29 lead, only for Spartak to come out of the locker room spitting fire.

They outscored UMMC 27-12 over the next 10 minutes to cut the deficit to just four points heading into the final frame.

UMMC did just enough in the fourth quarter to secure the win which has given them two titles on the season after their Cup of Russia triumph over Spartak in March.

Maria Stepanova, the Russia national team captain who joined UMMC in mid-season from CSKA Moscow, led the way with 18 points while Poland international Agnieszka Bibrzycka contributed 17.

Svetlana Abrosimova, whom Vetra decided not to play in the Semi-Final defeat in the EuroLeague, started and played more than 38 minutes for UMMC on Tuesday.

The Russia international had seven rebounds to go with her six points.

Diana Taurasi, the MVP of the EuroLeague Women Final Four, had 17 points for Spartak but was a disappointing one of seven from three-point range.

Lauren Jackson contributed 14 points for Spartak.
