Spain: EuroBasket Is Wide Open Insists Aguilar

25.08.2005

Spain international Elisa Aguilar believes there are no firm favourites to win Eurobasket 2005 in Turkey.

The Ros Casares guard, who is part of the Spanish squad for next month's tournament, believes there are plenty of sides who have the ability to be crowned champions.

"We have already faced two of the rivals we will meet at the Eurobasket," she told www.feb.com.

"It was useful because we realised that all the teams that will go into this tournament are very strong and that every team has a chance."

The Spaniards have already lost to Group B rivals Lithuania earlier this summer but gained a confidence boosting win over Serbia & Montenegro in another preparation game.

Hosts Turkey, Romania and Russia are the other opponents Spain will come across in the first stage of the Eurobasket.

"Russia have a very high level, with players that play in the WNBA and who decide the EuroLeague," said Aguilar.

"But I don't see a favourite team to win the Eurobasket just yet.

"When we face Russia, we will try to give everything and beat them, we know that in order to have any chance of success we need to be 100% and it will be difficult.

"Our aim is to finish second in our group and for Spain to qualify for a place in next year's World Championships in Brazil."

Aguilar, who is the third most experienced player in the Spain squad having made 80 appearances for the women in red, believes her side are capable of qualifying for the 2006 World Championships.

"Following the Games in Athens we have created a group that perfectly combines youth and experience," said the 28-year-old.

"All of us are really keen to achieve great things, to win games, regardless of who goes on the court.

"Of course I would like to have a starring role in this tournament but the most important thing is that we work as a team in order to qualify Spain for next year's World Championships."
