Spain took revenge for Saturday’s defeat by Serbia & Montenegro with a controversial victory over the same opponents 48 hours later in Guadalajara.

Vicente Rodriguez’s troops won the second game 60-57 after an unexpected break near the end of the game.

The fiery encounter was stopped when the visitors decided to protest against a refereeing decision.

They refused to play and only returned to the court following a time-out.

Once the game resumed, Amaya Valdemoro, who seems to be hitting top form just in time for the European Championships, intercepted a pass and scored the game-clinching basket.

Valdemoro led the way with 13 points for Spain.

In Serbia & Montenegro’s 64-57 win in Caceres, one of Spain’s best players, Laia Palau, suffered a knock on the head and had to go to hospital for precautionary tests.

“It was a heavy knock, but fortunately it has turned out to be nothing more than a fright,” she said.

She played no part in the win on Monday.

Serbia & Montenegro’s first game in Group A on September 19 is against Poland in Pyrgos. Spain are in Group B, and open their tournament against Belgium in Amaliada.
