ZVVZ USK Prague made it two straight wins in EuroLeague Women Group C with an 83-72 road triumph at VICI Aistes in Lithuania.
|Ever-Young DeLisha Milton-Jones gave her team another inspiring performance with 18 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals|
Fully aware of the dangers of playing in Kaunas, the place where Sparta&K M.R. Vidnoje lost in the opening week, Prague were focused from the start and got big performances from several players, including Eva Viteckova (21 points) and Delisha Milton-Jones (18 pts).
Prague, playing without injured Greece international Evina Maltsi, started well with Czech internationals Viteckova and Katerina Elhotova wreaking havoc.
The game was knotted at 2-2 when Elhotova popped a three-pointer to ignite an 18-5 Prague run.
Elhotova had nine of her 16 points in the game in that opening spell.
VICI Aistes are resilient, though, and Courtnay Pilypaitis' lay-up cut the advantage to 23-18 with 1:35 to go in the first quarter.
Prague ended up taking a 29-20 lead to the second frame but weren't able to pull away as the hosts reduced the deficit to 44-37 before going to the break down by 11.
VICI Aistes stayed within striking distance, due largely to Ausra Bimbaite's free-throw shooting.
While she struggled from the floor, Bimbaite buried all 13 of her shots at the charity stripe on her way to 20 points.
Prague had too much down low, however.
They made 26 of 45 (57.7%) shots inside the arc, with Milton-Jones, Lindsay Whalen (16pts), Elhotova and Viteckova doing most of the damage.
After opening up a 17-point lead late in the third quarter, Prague's advantage never dipped below 11 in the fourth as they sent VICI Aistes to third straight setback.
Prague Head Coach Lubor Blazek:
"Of course we are really happy we won on the road. We knew this would not be easy because VICI-Aistes beat Sparta&K in the first round. We were in situation, that we already lost 2 games and we really needed this victory. In the second half we were up by 17 points and it was very important to keep this difference. We managed to win and that is the most important. "
Prague Guard Katerina Elhotova:
"I am also very happy we won. The greatest thing is that we played as a team. We defended against their best player Ausra Bimbaite very well."
Vici Aistes Head Coach Mantas Sernius:
"It's the second game in a row that we let our opponents run away from the first minutes of the game. And we couldn't control the game from that moment. Furthermore, we didn't do well in transition defense, as our opponents had 17 fast break points and we had only 4. We didn't switch in defense well as well. It is very hard for us to adjust to defenses of Euroleague teams. We don't get this kind of aggresion in Lithuanian league so we have to adjust ourselves to that."
Kaunas Guard Rima Valentiene:
"It's a pity we lost the game. But we hope we will be able to show our abbilities in upcoming games. We work a lot but we have to work even more."
