Prague Turn On The Style Early In Romp Over Gorzow

ZVVZ USK Prague beat KSSSE AZS-PWSZ Gorzow 96-79 to send the EuroLeague Women newcomers crashing to their third successive defeat in the competition.

Lubor Blazek's Czechs, upset at home in Group C last week by surprise package Rivas Ecopolis, scored eight straight points in the first quarter to lead 8-4 and stayed on top the rest of the way.

A 10-0 run at the end of the first period left the Czech champions with a 23-11 advantage and they lowered the boom over the next four minutes to open up a 36-17 lead.

By half-time, Prague's Latvia international Ieva Kublina had poured in 16 points as Prague had a 48-30 stranglehold on proceedings.

The lead ballooned to 65-39 with 3:21 to go in the third quarter for Prague.

Gorzow didn't give up and twice reduced the arrears to 13 in the fourth quarter, including 80-67 with 6:26 to go.

Katerina Elhotova and Cathrine Kraayeveld buried three-balls to extend the lead back to 19 and Prague cruised the rest of the way.

Czech international Elhotova, who could have a pivotal role for her national team next year when they host the 2010 FIBA World Championship for Women, poured in 25 points.

She was five of 10 from long range.

Kraayeveld was outstanding as well, drilling four of eight from behind the arc on her way to 18 points.

She and Kublina pulled down nine rebounds apiece.

For Gorzow, Agnieszka Kaczmarczyk finished with 20 points and Izabela Piekarska had 17.

"First I would like to congratulate USK Praha. They had a great game, offensively it was just perfect. What I liked a lot about this game was that we had two "queens" of the game, they were both born in 1989, two young players on both sides of the court - Katerina Elhotova and Agnieszka Kaczmarczyk, they both were the best players of the team today. We tried three different defensive styles but still, USK Praha was very succesful in making their shots. Our team had a hard schedule recently, as this was our third away EuroLeague game in a row. So I am hoping that we will do better back home next week."

"Offensively, USK Praha had a great performance tonight, 96 points is a lot to score in a EuroLeague game. We tried more types of defense but the USK team was able to react to these changes and use them for thier advantage."

"Because of last weeks failure this game was hard, the team still did not recover totally from it. Even though we missed the very beginning of today's game, we stopped our opponent on time not to give them the early lead. Our group is a hard one to start with, people usually just see names of the clubs that are new in EuroLeague, but these new teams are very strong as well. The second halftime defense was not very good though, we let Gorzow score 49 pts! We were ready for the zone defense so it was not a surprise for us, we kept our patience and thanks to that we had open positions to make such an amount of three point shots. And, 13 offensive rebound is a nice figure, too."

"The important moments were the beginning of the game and the third period, which usually is pretty critical in our games. Gorzow's defence started quite high so when we managed to play over their pressing players, we had more chances to form overload situations and exploit the defence. And, when we played 5 on 5, we knew what to do against the zone defence and we were lucky with our makes. For me, 25 points is my EuroLeague record so I feel happy."
