Victory Drought Ends As Nadezhda Hammer Avenida
// 26 November 2008

Nadezhda tasted victory for the first time in the EuroLeague Women on Wednesday with an 83-62 victory over Halcon Avenida.

The Russian outfit avenged a 77-74 setback in the first meeting between the sides.

Avenida (5-2) began the day's play as the first-place team in Group A and there were no signs of an impending blowout at the start of the second half.

The visitors' Petra Stampalija tied the game at 42-42 with a jump shot at the beginning of the third quarter.

But Nadezhda tightened up the defense and held the Salamanca club to just four points over the next 13 minutes and opened up a 69-46 lead.

Vladimir Koloskov's team cruised to victory over the final seven minutes of the contest.

Shameka Christon had 13 of her game-high 20 points for Nadezhda in the first half while Betty Lennox contributed 17 and Begona Garcia 15.

Belarus international center Anastasiya Veremeenko had 13 points and 12 rebounds for Nadezhda.

The home side dominated on the boards with 40 rebounds to just 30 for Avenida.

They were far superior shooting the ball as well, making 10 of 22 (45.4%) from long range and 20 of 47 (42.5%) inside the arc. Koloskov's side also made 13 of 18 (72.2%) at the free throw line.

The Nadezhda defense also forced Avenida to turn the ball over 21 times while they committed just 12 themselves.

Veremeenko, one of the best shot-blockers in the world, had three against Avenida.

The only player to reach double figures in scoring for the Spanish club was Le'Coe Willingham with 16.

Donnette Snow was just three of 10 from the floor and finished with seven points and nine rebounds.

Avenida were seven of 18 (38.8%) from three-point distance, just 15 of 37 (40.5%) inside the arc and 11 of 14 (78.5%) at the charity stripe.

They will attempt to get back on track next week when they host Besiktas Cola Turka while Nadezhda take on Bourges.

Nadezhda lost their first meeting with Bourges in France 79-45.
