22 October 2008

Besiktas Cola Turka bounced back from their EuroLeague Women season-opening 30-point demolition at Bourges by winning an overtime thriller against MiZo Pecs on Wednesday evening in Turkey.

Trailing 80-76 with 3:03 left in the extra period, the Turkish team finished strong with an 8-2 run for an 84-82 triumph.

Laura Harper, who had a phenomenal 26-point, 19-rebound night for Besiktas, made the go-ahead free throws with 1:23 remaining to make it 82-80.

Shay Doron, who failed to make a potential game-winning jump shot at the end of regulation, added two more from the stripe before MiZo Pecs drew closer just inside the final minute with a pair of Kelly Mazzante free throws.

Harper and Müjde Yüksel each missed two at the line in the final 17 seconds to give MiZo a chance to tie or win.

Andrea Somogyi missed a lay-up following Harper's misses and after Yüksel was off target at the line with her two, Mazzante took aim from long range for a potential game-winner but misfired as MiZo lost.

Vajda had 27 points and 13 rebounds for MiZo.

Both teams are now 1-1 in Group A.
