Jekabsone-Zogota Gets Hot Late As Dynamo Win

Anete Jekabsone-Zogota was this week voted as the FIBA Europe Women's Player of the Year and on Friday night, she celebrated with a game-winning performance for Dynamo Moscow in the EuroLeague Women play-offs.

Jekabsone-Zogota, held to just five points in the first three quarters by Lotos PKO BP, poured in 13 in the fourth quarter and then nine in overtime as Dynamo came back from a 10-point deficit to win 79-74 in Gdynia, Poland.

The win completed a 2-0 sweep in their eighth-finals showdown and put Dynamo into the quarter-finals.

Jekabsone-Zogota, a Latvia international, has few equals on the court right now and there was certainly no one in the Polish team who could stop her - at least over the final 15 minutes that were played.

Lotos PKO BP will not sleep very well on Friday.

They led 51-41 two minutes into the fourth quarter, but a three-pointer from Jekabsone-Zogota sparked the Dynamo fightback.

With her Dynamo and Latvia national team coach, Ainars Zvirgzdins, chattering away on the sidelines, Nuria Martinez followed with a jump shot and Jekabsone-Zogota added a lay-up to make it 51-48 with less than seven minutes left.

Magdalena Leciejewska stopped the rot for Lotos PKO BP with a jumper to make it 53-48, but Jekabsone-Zogota, who by this time could have been wearing a Superwoman costume, followed with back-to-back three-pointers to give Dynamo a 54-53 lead.

Former USA international Chamique Holdsclaw eventually put Lotos PKO BP back into a 57-56 lead with 2:17 remaining, but Dynamo went back in front and when Jekabsone-Zogota made a pair of free throws for a 60-57 lead just 33 seconds from the end, her team looked as if they would win in regulation.

Katsiaryna Snytsina drilled a three-ball for Lotos PKO BP with 17 seconds remaining to tie the game, though, and Martinez missed a jumper with six seconds to go that allowed the contest to go to overtime.

Lotos PKO BP had their home fans behind them and when Snytsina drained a jumper at the start of the extra period, they went into the lead.

After emerging American star Seimone Augustus made a lay-up to tie the game at 62-62, Snytsina again scored, this time with a lay-up, to put Lotos PKO BP back in front, but that would prove to be their final lead.

Jekabsone-Zogota answered with another three-ball, taking her points haul to 21, to start an 8-0 run that put Dynamo in front the rest of the way.

Augustus also had 15 points for the Russian team.
