Brave K Cero ICP Fall To Dynamo Moscow

14.12.2005

Dynamo Moscow's glittering array of international talent turned in big games on Wednesday as the Russian team thrashed winless K Cero ICP 82-65 in Slovakia.

The Slovakians were threatening to spring an upset midway through the contest. They held a 41-36 lead after a basket from Tiffani Johnson but the visitors closed to 41-40 by half-time, with USA international point guard Sue Bird sinking a three-pointer to send Dynamo to the changing room in upbeat mood, Bird followed that up with a basket at the start of the second half, and fellow Team USA star Diana Taurasi added a three-pointer to stretch the lead further.

The hosts never led again, although they did manage to keep the game close into the fourth quarter.

Marie Ruzickov√° scored two baskets and Johnson another in a mini-run which saw K Cero ICP pull to 65-63 with 7:08 remaining in the contest.

Back-to-back jump shots by Taurasi, followed by a steal and easy lay-up from Bird put the Russian team back in command.

Another Taurasi jumper capped the 12-0 run with 3:02 to play, leaving Dynamo with a 77-63 lead.

That burst left the hosts reeling.

Oxana Rakhmatulina paced the winners with 16 points while Taurasi and Tatiana Shchegoleva had 15 and 13, respectively.

Rakhmatulina and Shchegoleva should represent Russia next year at the FIBA World Championship for women in Brazil while Taurasi and Bird are almost certain to play for Team USA.

Dynamo's next EuroLeague Women game will be on January 11 at home to Phard Napoli.

The Russians will go into that game with five wins and three defeats in Group C.

As for the Slovakians, they have lost all eight of their games. They will travel to face US Valenciennes, also on January 11.
