Wielebnowska Rescues Dexia

02 November 2005

Two final second free throws from Anna Wielebnowska lifted Dexia Namur to their first victory of the EuroLeague Women season on Thursday night against USK Praha.

Dexia opened their EuroLeague campaign with a tough trip to Samara and were comprehensively beaten by the 2005 champions, 70-59.

Praha, who travelled to Belgium without US guard Sheri Sam who is currently out of favour with the team, may have seemed an easier prospect, but it took overtime to separate the two teams.

It was Praha who looked in better shape in the first three quarters. Led by Svitlana Volnaya, a player Dexia is more than familiar with (she played for the Belgians last season), the Czech side led by as many as 13 points in the third quarter, 45-58.

But Dexia refused to give up and when Krystyna Szymanska-Lara exploded for 13 points in 7 minutes, Dexia were right back in contention at 64-67 with eight minutes to play.

Polish international Wielebnowska stepped up her game in the fourth to give Dexia the lead, but a Volnaya basket at the end of regulation tied the scores at 76-76.

Overtime favoured the home side, but it took a costly turnover and foul from Praha to give Dexia the chance to win the game. The opportunity fell to Wielebnowska and her two free throws gave Dexia the win.

The 36 year old Szymanska-Lara led Dexia with 25 points while Nicole Ohlde had 19 points and 11 rebounds and Wielebnowska 15 points.

Volnaya finished with 21 points and 9 rebounds for Praha.
