Lietuvos Telekomas 59 vs. US Valenciennes Olympic 50
// 03 November 2004

History repeated itself in Vilnius tonight as Lietuvos Telekomas produced a another victory over Valenciennes, just as they did 1 year ago. New signing Katie Douglas was instrumental in the win and her 25 points and 4 steals led the home side.

As is custom at the start of the season, both teams were nervous in the opening moments and after 3 minutes, just 3 points were on the board. The home team settled behind Douglas, who had 8 points in the first period, and Vilnius led 14-10 at the end of the quarter.

Valenciennes were without start names Audrey Sauret and Allison Feaster, both of whom are injured. Despite the lack of firepower, they were not about to submit easily and they tied the game at 16-16 in the second period.

But as soon as Valenciennes seemed back in the game, Vilnius woke up and rallied. They took a 23-21 lead and would in fact never trail for the remainder of the contest.

Vilnius led by 9 points at halftime and although Valenciennes got to within 2 points in the third period (41-39) on a Ticha Penicheiro basket, Vilnius managed to keep their noses in front.

The game's key moment came courtesy of Douglas. Her steal and 3-pointer with 3 minutes to go gave Vilnius a commanding 10-point lead, and they held on for a very welcome home victory.

Algirdas Paulauskas, Head Coach, Lietuvos Telekomas:

"The result is better than the game itself. We have to work on our offence and team play."

Laurent Bouffard, Head Coach, Valenciennes:

"I am happy that our team was fighting until the end. It is hard to win against such a good team as Vilnius, when 4 out of 5 best players are injured. Last year we lost the first game in Vilnius and then we went on to win the EuroLeague, so perhaps it is a good sign."
