Lithuania: Lietuvos telekomas – 129 And Counting

22 November 2004

Lietuvos Telekomas kept their 129-game winning streak alive this weekend. While there was nothing unusual about the Lithuanian champs adding another “W” to their record, it was their opponents who provided a fresh challenge.

One of the challengers takes the opportunity to swap shirts with Ausra Bimbaite
In fact, Lietuvos’ challengers were a group of wannabe celebrities taking part in the reality show, “The Bar”. The show, which is broadcast in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Argentina, Portugal, Hungary, Switzerland, Uruguay, Poland, Greece, Holland, Cyprus, Lithuania and Latvia is hugely popular in Lithuania and revolves around 12 strangers who come together to run a downtown nightspot.

The 2 teams played 3-on-3 for two, 10-minute quarters and was of course filmed live for show. Lietuvos were having a fairly easy time, before Ausra Bimbaite joined the other team and evened the contest.

But Lietuvos, who are unbeaten in all competitions this season, pulled a win out of the bag at the death when Jolanta Vilutyte’s last second rebound and 2 points won the game for Lithuanian champions.

Lietuvos have a week off European competition this week, but return to action on 1st December when they face Ukrainian side Kozachka-Zalk Zaporozhye in Vilnius.
