Can anybody stop Parma’s Gordana Grubin? After 10 games in the EuroLeague Women, the answer is an emphatic “No!” The Serbian and Montenegrin leads all scorers in the competition at 20.4 ppg and on Wedensday night, she was at her emphatic best against Hungarian side MiZo Pecs.
Pecs were the undoubted favourites going into the game, as testified by their 6-3 record, compared to just 2-7 for Parma. Nonetheless, the Italians were not intimidated, racing away to an early 13:6 lead thanks to two 3-pointers from the prolific Grubin.
Pecs worked their way back into the game, and took control in the 3rd quarter, leading by 9-points. Pecs center Albena Branzova was the MVP of the first week of the competition after she torched Samara for 29 points. Since then she has struggled a little, but came back to form against Parma, scoring 27 points.
But the day belonged to Grubin. She steered her side back into the game and with 40 seconds to go the game was tied at 75:75. With time winding down Grubin calmly seized control and her 3-pointer with seconds remaining was the game winner.
Grubin finished with an outstanding 33 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals. Taj McWilliams added 10 points and 11 rebounds for Parma.
Pecs point guard Dalma Ivanyi played to her usual high standards, scoring 16 points, pulling down 7 rebounds and picking up 4 steals.
