EuroLeague rookies Barcelona continue to be the surprise team of the season. They retain their status as the only undefeated side in the competition thanks to a 76:81 victory over French club Pays d’Aix.
Aix actually started the game as the stronger side. Consecutive 3-pointers from Sviatlana Volnaya set the tone as the home side amassed 28 first quarter points, to 23 from Barcelona.
Aix continued their impressive offensive play into the 2nd quarter and led by Australian captain Kristi Harrower, they increased their advantage by up to 14 points.
Towards the end of the 2nd, Barcelona cut into the Aix lead, but it was in the 3rd that they turned the game.
Sparked by Tracy Reid, Barcelona took firm control, outscoring their opponents 29:13 and taking a 61:70 advantage into the last period.
Aix managed to cut into Barcelona’s lead in the 4th, but not enough to worry the Spanish side who now top Group A with a 5-0 record.
Reid was Barcelona’s top scorer with 19 points, to which she added 7 rebounds and 3 steals.
Serb and Montenegrin international Lara Mandic finished with 17 points for Aix, as did Sonja Kireta.
Aix’s Natalie Lesdema was named MVP for her 16-point, 9-rebound and 2-block effort.
