Day Five: Qualifying Round Set

The Preliminary Round is finished in the Division B games of the U16 European Championship Men to set the final picture of the Qualifying Round.

Bulgaria, Denmark, Finland and Romania will compete in Group E while the neighbor Group F will host Slovenia, Sweden, England and Hungary.

Denmark completed a perfect round with a 71-59 win over the winless Ireland, but the main course of Group A was the battle for the second spot between Finland and Georgia.

A very unproductive first half saw the teams split at the break tied at 22-22, but Finland were the first to recover and jump to a 39-30 at the end of the third.

Georgia were still silent on the offensive end and scored only two points in the last quarter to lose 66-32 and give Finland the spot in the next round.

Joonas Cav?n led Finland with 12 points and ten rebounds. Joonas Lehtoranta added 12 of his own.

In Group B Bulgaria and Romania secured their spots in the next round before the last day that was left for set the final standings.

Romania lost 78-71 to Switzerland as Clint N'Dumba-Capela had another good performance for the winning side with 19 points, ten rebounds and three blocks.

The hosting team of Portugal wrote a 56-51 win over Belgium to take the third spot in the group behind 16 points by Hugo Correia S? E Sota.

Slovenia and Sweden as well were already locked in the top two spots of the Group C games before the last day.

Nevertheless Slovenia destroyed Austria 80-55 after a one-sided first half as Rok Jagodic scored 12 for Slovenia and Oliver Sturm had 13 for the losing side.

Luxembourg wrote their first win, 76-75 over Belarus. Alex Laurent had 28 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and two blocks for the winning side including the winning three pointer right before the buzzer. Anton Papruha hit 22 for the team from Minsk.

In Group D England remained perfect with an 88-69 victory over Netherlands as Devon Van Oostrum wrote another big day with 27 points, nine rebounds and six steals.

That left just one last and final spot for the battle between Hungary and the Slovak Republic, and after a long fought match it was Hungary to write an 87-76 win.

The Slovak Republic team enjoyed a big second quarter to hold a 44-35 lead at the break, but saw Hungary win the third quarter 25-11 to take the lead and lock the win.

Laszlo Dobos led the winners with 20 points, 11 boards and two blocks. Martin S?menek added 20 as well, while David Flaska scored 26 for the Slovak team.
