France beat Georgia 65-58 to secure third place in Group E of the qualifying round and guarantee that they will finish in the top eight.
Leo Westermann had 13 points and eight rebounds as Tahar Assed Liegeon’s men were in control for the better part of the game and, even though they gave up a double-digit lead late in the game, Georgia’s inexperience proved costly as France edged them out.
Mikheil Kobeshavidze’s side trailed 57-46 at the start of the final quarter but used an 11-0 run to jump ahead, 58-57, on Beqa Chikviladze’s three-pointer with just over four minutes left in the game
However, Georgia then had a myriad of errors including several turnovers and France recovered by scoring the last eight points of the game for the final score.
Georgia will now battled it out with Israel, Latvia and Ukraine in the games for places 9-12 over the weekend.
Chikviladze finished with a game-high 19 points and Tariel Tavartkiladze added 11 points and seven rebounds.
