Vladimir Pichkurov scored a game-winning lay-up with eight seconds remaining to give Russia an 81-79 win over Turkey in the teams final quarter-final round game at the Termosteps U16 European Championship in Spain.

Turkey led for almost the entire game, but Russia held the lead when it mattered most – at the end of the game.

Russia didn’t take their first lead of the game until Aleksandr Karpukhin drilled a three-pointer with just over two minutes to play to give his side a 74-73 advantage.

The teams exchanged baskets and it seemed that Turky had re-taken control when they went ahead by three with 58 seconds to go after Brikan Batuk scored on a lay-up (79-76).

Andrey Semenov’s jump-shot with 45 seconds got Russia to within one and following an empty Turkish possession, Teymuraz Babunashvili hit one of two free throws to tie the game at 79 with 13 seconds to go.

Seconds later, Ibrahim Yildirim, who scored 23 points for Turkey, misfired on a three-point attempt and Pichkurov was able to convert in transition with eight seconds to go, putting Russia ahead 81-79.

Turkey was unable to get off a shot before the final buzzer allowing Russia to complete the comeback victory.

The Russians trailed by double digits throughout the game and were in an early hole when they were outscored 22-9 in the first quarter. Batuk scored 10 of his 23 points in the first quarter to spark the Turkis run.

Turkey held a comfortable margin and were ahead by eight going into the fourth quarter.

Russia went on a 7-0 run to get within one point midway through the fourth and the game would be neck-and-neck until the final buzzer.
