GAME REPORT

Poland Fend Off Charging Italy

Poland continue to be the Cinderella of the Omnitel U16 European Championship Men after a 59-53 triumph over Italy in Group E of the Qualifying Round.

Poland climbed to a 2-1 record that moves them very close to the Quarter-Finals.

Italy is down to 0-3 and will need to find their first win in the remaining two days.

Tomasz Gielo had 17 points for Poland with seven boards, Przemyslaw Karnowski and Piotr Niedzwiedzki added 11 points each while Michal Michalak had ten.

Francesco Veccia led Italy with 23 points including five hits from distance, but was the only player on his team in double-digits.

"The key for our win was controlling the boards," said head coach Jerzy Szambelan referring to the 50-28 dominance of his team.

"We did a good job on defense limiting their stars, and as long as we were focused on that we managed to have a decent gap from Italy."

Italy took the first lead, but saw Poland answer with a shocking 17-0 run with Karnowski scoring inside and Niedzwiedzki displaying his inside-outside game.

The double-digit difference remained until Matteo Varuzza scored five in a row and cut the score to 25-19 on the edge of the first half finish line.

Michalak showed his lethal handle from three-point land to separate the teams by nine points at the break.

Veccia kept threatening the Polish lead, but Gielo fought for every ball and scored key points around the rim to make sure Italy stay far enough.

With a safe lead in the pocket Poland added seven points in a row late in the third and early in the fourth to push the gap to 49-32 but just when it seemed like a done deal, Italy showed life signs.

Veccia scored nine individual points in a row, and with a bank shot from distance cut the lead to only one, 54-53 with a bit over two minutes to play.

That was the last sound Italy made.

The Polish team went inside to Karnowski who broke the drought and scored the last five points of the game to keep it Poland strong in the race for the quarters.
