Vazquez Ready For Spain Return If Wanted

The 2010 FIBA World Championship may be the tournament in which Fran Vazquez returns to Spain's national team.

Barcelona's Copa del Rey MVP hasn't played for Spain since helping them reach the EuroBasket 2005 Semi-Finals but Vazquez has told Spain coach Sergio Scariolo he wants to play for the country again and will go to Turkey this summer if selected.

"If (Spain coach Sergio) Scariolo calls me up, I will go to the World Championship with the national team,"  Vazquez said.

"I have never shut the door to the national team."

Vazquez was in the squad for the 2006 FIBA World Championship but withdrew due to a back injury and hasn't been included since, although he decided to make himself unavailable last summer in Poland when Spain won the EuroBasket gold medal for the first time.

"I spoke to Sergio Scariolo and I explained why I could not go to the last EuroBasket for personal reasons," Vazquez said.

"He understood it.

"If he calls me up, I will go to the World Championship because I am the first to be enthusiastic and I would be proud to compete for a medal in a World Championship or at the Olympics."

With two-time reigning FIBA Europe Player of the Year, Pau Gasol, strongly hinting that he will not play in Turkey, Vazquez's appearance seems even more likely.

Much has happened since Vazquez exploded onto the ACB scene in the 2004-05 campaign.

After that season, he was selected 11th overall in the NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic and was poised for a move to Florida but Akasvayu Girona made him a far-more lucrative offer and Vazquez decided to remain in Spain.

"I feel more mature," he said.

"My NBA rights are held by Orlando and they have told me the doors are open if one day I decide to take that leap. .. but everyone has their careers and I am very happy in Barcelona."

Barcelona won the Copa and they are flying high in the ACB in first place. In the Euroleague, Barcelona are also the favorites to win the title.
