U20 MEN DIVISION B

Devon Van Oostrum
Great Britain place thier hopes on the already highly experienced guard Devon Van Oostrum

Croatia, who were relegated last summer and are seeking an immediate return to Division A, Great Britain, Portugal, Denmark and Belarus are the five contenders in Group C.

GREAT BRITAIN

Devon Van Oostrum played at last year's EuroBasket for Great Britain but didn't make the cut for the Olympic squad.

He'll be a valuable member of the British team at the U20 European Championship Division B.

Van Oostrum will be joined in the side by Ali Fraser and Jesse Chuku. Fraser, a 2.01m center from Scotland, averaged 8.8 points and 4.2 rebounds in just 17.6 minutes per game at last year's U20 Division B event.

Chuku, a 1.96m forward, is making the step up from the U18 European Championship where he averaged 6.8 points, 3 boards, 1.4 blocks and 1 steal.

PORTUGAL

Among the opponents for the Brits in Group C are Portugal, a side that edged them in the opening game of last year's U20 tournament, 60-57.

Miguel Cardoso, a 1.84m point guard, was in last year's team and averaged more than 10 points and 3 assists per game.

He was particularly effective against Britain when he scored a team-high 14.Look for the Porto-born playmaker to have a leading role in this summer's team.

Sergio Santos, a 1.98m small forward, averaged 5 points and 3.4 boards in last year's team and is back in the side again.

BELARUS

Belarus didn't have a team in the U18 European Championship Division A or B last year, but they should have a couple of returning players from the U20 Division B event poised for prominent roles.

Point guard Anton Papruha averaged 5.1 points in 14 minutes per game while the 2.07m power forward/center Aliaksandr Semianiuk played almost half of each game and averaged 6.9 points and 6.0 rebounds.

CROATIA

Croatia came in dead last at the U20 European Championship Division A and were demoted.

The aim is to go right back up and with Jere Vucica, Henrik Sirko, Roko Rogic and Franko Sango all set to have important roles in the team coached by Niksa Bavcevic, they'll have every chance.

Each hit double digits in points in an impressive 95-82 win over Italy on Sunday.

DENMARK

The Danish impressed with a strong display at last year's U20 European Championship Division B.

They finished in seventh place thanks mainly to some stratospheric performances by center Jonas Bergstedt, who averaged 22.4 points and 13.5 rebounds per contenst.

Bergstedt is no longer eligible to compete, but Denmark can place their hopes on another big man, Philip Hertz.

The 2.10m Hertz had 5.1 points and 3.1 rebounds per game last year and should get help from shooting guard Yaw Gyamfi, who is also returning this summer.
