Lithuania star Darius Songaila has been cleared to play at EuroBasket 2007 despite fitness concerns over the Washington Wizards forward.
Fellow NBA side Phoenix Suns last week told Boris Diaw that he would be unable to train with the France squad unless appropriate insurance was found to clear the Spurs of liability in case of a recurrence of his back injury.
A similar situation could have affected Songaila. The veteran returned from national team duty at the FIBA World Championship last summer with a back injury and missed the first 45 games of the season, eventually making 37 appearances and averaging 7.6 points and 3.6 rebounds a game.
However Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld told the Washington Post: "I think everybody would love to represent their country and he enjoys doing that.
"He didn't play as many minutes as he would have liked last season, so it's a good opportunity to get some game time under his belt."
Lithuania will contest Group C of the EuroBasket in Mallorca along with the Czech Republic, Germany and Turkey. |
