Greece Chalk Up First Win


Greece collected their first win in the games with a 74-71 victory over Ukraine.

The players of Coach Sigalas improved their record to 1-1 while Ukraine is still looking for their first win.

Michail Giannakidis and Michail Tsairelis scored 15 points each for the winners, while Vadym Noreko led Ukraine with 25 points and six rebounds, followed by Oleksandr Kolchenko with 14, five rebounds and six assists.

Sergey Gladyr, who set a youth tournament record in day one for most made three-pointers, finished the this game with no hits out of five attempts.

Greece trailed in the early minutes but finished the first quarter with a 25-22 lead.

Ukraine connected twice in a row from long range to take the lead again, but Nicholas Calathes was there to keep Greece on top.

Big guy Norenko showed he can shoot from long range, and his fourth three-pointer of the half crowned him with 19 points and his team with a 47-43 half-time lead.

Antonios Michaloglou connected on four points in a row for Greece to cap a 13-0 run, which gave Greece a 62-53 lead entering the last quarter.

Ukraine managed to get three points behind with a little less than two minutes on the game clock, but missed twice from long range, which allowed Greece to keep the win in their pocket.

Greece will try to be the first team to beat Lithuania tomorrow, while Ukraine will try to upset Croatia.
