Schio Take Stranglehold On Final

Beretta-Famila have one hand on the EuroCup Women trophy after pulling away in the second half in the opening leg of their title showdown with BC Moscow for an 87-67 victory.

Laura Macchi had 20 points - 16 in the second half when the Schio team blew the game wide open.

The Italian outfit killed their opponents with long-range shooting at home, connecting on eight of 16 shots, while inside the arc they buried 27 of 43.

The Russians must have thought they were on the right track in the first half.

They led by as many as five points on two occasions in the second quarter but were unable to press home the advantage and ended up going to half-time trailing 40-35.

The Schio team's Mudju Ngoyisa buried a jump shot for the last basket of the second quarter to take her points haul to 12.

BC Moscow kept the contest close until a flurry of three-pointers from Beretta-Famila in the third quarter put the Italians in control.

Macchi and Elisabetta Moro hit back-to-back three-balls for a 51-43 lead.

Oxana Zakalyuzhnaya drilled a jumper for BC Moscow, only for Raffaella Masciadri  to hit another shot from the arc for Schio.

When Deanne Joy Butler nailed another three for the last points of the quarter, Schio led 66-51.

The home side then scored the first seven points of the final period to open up a 22-point lead and cruised to a decisive victory.

The Italian club has a huge advantage to take to Russia, but it will be reminded of their come-from-behind victory in their semi-final against Galatasaray.

After losing the first leg in Istanbul 63-55, the Italians battled back and claimed an 84-67 triumph to reach the final.

Zakalyuzhnaya had a team-high 17 points for BC Moscow.
