Gran Canaria seized the initiative in their EuroCup Women Sixteenth-Finals tie with Lemminkainen by winning the opening leg 68-58 in Lithuania.

Patricia Arguello poured in 21 points and Italy international Kathrin Ress contributed 12 with eight rebounds.

Lemminkainen led at the end of the first quarter but the hosts weren't able to press home the advantage.

Two free-throws and then a jump shot - all by Ress - at the end of the second quarter put the visitors in front to stay.

The Spanish led by as many as 14 points in the fourth quarter.

Monika Grigalauskyte gave the hosts a solid effort with eight points and 12 boards.

Saarlouis Royals played hard and stayed within striking distance for three quarters before Arras blew out the German team 28-7 in the last quarter for a 92-62 victory.

Pauline Akonga finished with 18 points and 12 boards for the French outfit, who overcame a 19-point, nine-rebound effort from Tyresa Smith of Saarlouis.

Defending EuroCup Women winners Sony Athinaikos struggled in their weekend game against Aris before winning but they had no trouble on the road at SCM-CSS Craiova in the EuroCup.

The Greek outfit rolled to an 86-49 victory with Greece international Katerina Sotiriou's 14 points leading the way.

The other winner on the opening night of Sixteenth-Finals action was Chevakata, who blew out Lupa Promotion Novi Zagreb 83-56 in Croatia.
