Taranto Overcome Gorzow To Reach Last Eight

Levoni Taranto defeated KSSSE AZS-PWSZ Gorzow 81-70 to make the quarter-finals of the EuroCup Women.

After the first game in Poland finished 72-72, there was all to play for in Italy on Thursday night.

The visitors made the game very interesting, especially in the first half when they led 31-30 with 5:45 remaining in the second quarter after a basket by Dénaïmou Christelle N'Garsanet .

That shot took her total to 11 points.

But Monica Bello replied immediately with a three-pointer and Taranto led for the remainder of the game.

They would end up moving in front by as many as nine (42-33) before going to the changing rooms for the half-time break ahead at 42-35.

The Gorzow team scored the first basket of the second half, but Taranto took a stranglehold on proceedings with a 12-2 run that the visitors never recovered from.

By the end of the third quarter, the lead was 65-48. KSSSE AZS-PWSZ Gorzow managed to close the gap to 78-70, but there was only 47 seconds remaining and Taranto won comfortably in the end.  

The hosts prevailed after strong performances by a host of players, most notably Rebekkah Brunson who had 22 points and 10 rebounds.

Laura Summerton poured in 18 and pulled down six rebounds, and point guard Michelle Greco also had a fine night by scoring 18 points. 

N'Garsanet had 19 points in defeat.

Tarbes won their game against Galatasaray 69-68, but the Turkish outfit had too much of an advantage after the game in Istanbul to come under serious threat.

Galatasaray had won the first leg 61-41.

Gisela Vega, Tarbes' Argentinian center, scored nine points and had 10 boards to lead the French.
