Vedrana Grgin-Fonseca has shown a return to form this season and currently leads all scorers for former EuroLeague Champions Bourges Basket. It is for her performance against Pays D’Aix Basket 13 on Wednesday, however, that she picks up the Player of the Week award.

In a very close French derby in the Prado Stadium in Bourges, the 28-year old Croatian forward showed her nerves of steel, controlling the ball in the final seconds to allow the home team a 3-point win (62-59) and 3rd place in Group A. With 17 points (66.7% 2-point field goals) and 4 rebounds Grgin-Fonseca was a guiding light for her team in a sometimes scrappy game in which Aix’s aggressive defense often upset the hosts‘ rhythm. A further 3 steals and 3 assists added a nice edge to her final stats.

“This was a tough game,” commented Grgin-Fonseca after the final whistle, “we really had to battle hard. There are a lot of games like this a present, in the national Championship and in the EuroLeague. We just have to make sure that we win these ones that come down to the wire.”

This season has shown a real turn-around in fortunes for the Croatian as she was sidelined by injury for almost all of season 2002-2003, making only 4 appearances in early national league games and sitting out for Bourges’ entire EuroLeague campaign. Now fully fit, Grgin-Finseca will no doubt also be looking to retain her spot in the national team with a view to qualifying for the European Championship for Women in Turkey in 2005.
