U18 WOMEN DIVISION C
|Julia Xerri and Malta stay undefeated after the first two gamedays |
Malta and Andorra preserved their unbeaten records by taking wins on day two of the U18 European Championship Women Division C.
Once Malta had sunk the first nine points of the game against Gibraltar, they always looked on course to take another victory and so it proved, as they eased their way to a 49-36 success.
After their strong start, the result was never in doubt and especially when they doubled the score of their opponents at 32-16 early in the third quarter through a score by Julia Xerri.
Whilst there was a late wag of the tail in the last period by Gibraltar who restricted Malta to just eight points in 10 minutes, they were never able to find the necessary offensive power to haul themselves back into contention.
Maria Bonett excelled with 13 points, three assists and three steals for the winning team with Christina Curmi and Gabriella Mifsud making up for a disappointing shooting night by sharing an impressive 22 rebounds. Jamie Prescott pulled down 12 boards in defeat.
Andorra were slowed down offensively by Wales for long periods, but still managed to take a 42-28 victory thanks to a truly astonishing performance by Christina Andres.
She came up not only with an excellent 19 points, but completed a double-double by grabbing a wonderful 12 steals in the game as Wales cracked under her ball pressure and defence.
And, since Andorra didn't shoot the ball very well all night, her scores in transition were the difference in the game for the hosts who won all four quarters.
Tanisha Walker and Joanna Thomas each pulled down 15 rebounds for Wales who committed an eye-catching 54 turnovers.
