Promotion Door Open After Day Seven

15. Orian Amsalem (Israel)
Orian Amsalem shot seven of nine from the field to finish the game with 15 points

The promotion hopes of Greece and Hungary took a knock as both suffered their first defeats in the U20 European Championship Women Division B.

Greece went down 72-63 to an Israel team who entered the game with only one win in six, but used a big third quarter to take victory.

The Israelis trailed 38-33 at half-time but a 12-2 run early in the third gave them a 46-42 edge on Bar Galinski's lay-up and their lead moved into double-figures, 54-44, on Orian Amsalem's lay-up late in the period.

The lead was as high as 16 when Nof Kedem's lay-up made it 67-51 midway through the fourth, and although Greece finished on a 10-2 run the damage had been done.

Galinski scored 25 points with nine rebounds while Amsalem added 15 and Thea Lemberger 11.

Artemis Spanou was outstanding for Greece, collecting 32 points, 17 rebounds, four steals and three assists.

Hungary Suffer First Loss

Hungary went down 76-71 to a Germany team inspired by the outstanding Sonja Greinacher.

Greinacher went off for 15 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and three steals, while Finja Schaake led the scoring with 19 points.

Laura Hebecker had 16 points and Judith Schmidt 11.

Hungary wasted 25 points and eight rebounds from Lilla Adamecz while Krisztina Velkey had 15 points and eight assists.

The results mean Greece and Hungary are tied with 5-1 records while Germany are at 4-2.

Romania improved to 4-3 to keep their hopes alive but needed a huge second-half fightback and then overtime to top Bulgaria 87-82.

Bulgaria had led 44-33 at half-time and were up by 10 early in the fourth quarter.

But Romania came storming back and it was Bulgaria who needed Iva Kostova's lay-up to force the extra period in a 75-75 tie, and Romania then scored the first six points of the extra five minutes to romp home.

Gabriela Cursaru led five Romania players scoring in double figures - with those five accounting for all but two of their points in the game.

Cursaru had 24, Dora Ardelean 19, Sonia Ursu 16, Alexandra Ionescu 15 and Cristina Bigica 11. Ursu added eight rebounds and five assists.

Gabriela Kostova led Bulgaria with 22 points and 14 rebounds while Iva Kostova scored 16 and Mariya Svetoslavova 13.

There was no such drama in the day's other game with the Czech Republic demolishing Switzerland 71-42 to move to 4-2.

Dominika Pohunkova had 20 points while Barbora Kasparkova added 13 and 10 rebounds.
