France won bronze at the Ostchem U20 European Championship Women on Sunday night behind a strong display from Isabelle Yacoubou.
The 195 cm center scored 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as France completed a 64-55 victory over Spain.
After controlling most of the first three quarters, France had to withstand a furious comeback attempt by Spain in the fourth period.
Spain trailed 43-25 at halftime, but gradually clawed their way back into contention in the third quarter. They held France to just 5 points in the period and trailed by just 7 points going into the final quarter, 48-41.
Ana Suarez gave Spain the perfect start the fourth period, nailing a three-pointer to close the gap to 4 points, and suddenly's France's grip on the game seemed tenous at best.
France answered with a three-pointer from Sylvie Gruszczynski, but Spain's Maria Pina nailed a three-pointer and then a jump shot, which was followed by a lay-up from Suarez.
Pauline Jannault then missed a three-pointer and when Laura Gimeno converted a lay-up on an assist from Suarez, Spain took their first lead of the game, 52-53.
Unfortunately for the Spanish, it would be the only time they would have their noses in front.
France countered immediately with a 7-0 run and some strong work on the boards by Yacoubou saw the French hold on to win bronze.
France dominated under the basket throughout the night, outrebounding Spain 45-24.
Julie Barennes finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while point guard Gruszczynski also grabbed 10 rebounds to go along with 7 assists.
Spain suffered through a horrible shooting performance (32% from the field) and not one player broke double figures in scoring.
