Ruthless Spain Dominate Again

Spain held the Netherlands scoreless for an entire quarter and more as they underlined their favorites tag at the U20 European Championship Women with a 73-36 rout to open the qualifying round.

A 38-27 half-time advantage had bulged to 54-27 by the end of the third quarter as the Dutch went ice cold, missing 12 field goal attempts in all during the period.

The cold spell continued deep into the fourth quarter too as the Netherlands did not register again until Tamlyn de Groot split a pair of free throws with 6:40 left.

It was their first score in almost 14 and a half minutes of play, and ended a 25-0 Spanish run.

By that point, memories of the Netherland's 17-14 first quarter lead were long gone.

To make it even more impressive, Spain had been without Mireia Vila since the first quarter as the Barcelona forward, who was averaging 11 points per game at this tournament, left with a thigh problem and did not return.

Queralt Casas led Spain with 18 points while Leonor Rodriguez had 14, Amaya Gastaminza 12 and Vega Gimeno 11.

Maxime Essanstam was the sole Dutch player in double figures with 13 points.
