Group C: Serbia And Spain Set For Showdown

Sanja Orozovic's 21 points led four players in double figures and Sara Krnjic had her second straight double-double as Serbia recovered from a slow start for a comfortable 80-60 victory over Italy at the U20 European Championship for Women.

Krnjic collected 15 points, 10 rebounds and three steals in pulling Serbia to 2-0 in Group C action in Grobina. Nevena Jovanovic added 13 points and Jovana Popovic chipped in 10 points, five assists and three rebounds.

9. Marta Xargay (Spain)
Marta Xargay had a double-double for Spain.
Martina Bestagno scored 22 points to lead Italy, who dropped to 0-2. Her cousin Elena Bestagno had 14 points, four rebounds and four assists in a losing effort

Italy scored the first 12 points of the game en route to a 16-2 lead. The Serbs chipped away and it was a 24-15 Italian advantage after one quarter.

Italy opened the second with a 10-4 run for a 15-point lead - 34-19. Serbia  answered with an 8-0 surge and eventually pulled to within 40-35 at the break.

The Serbs finished off a 14-0 run spanning the second and third periods with the first nine points of the second half and a 13-2 start for a 48-42 lead, which was 55-47 after three periods.

Italy had one final push left in them, an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to 59-55 with just less than five minutes to play. But Serbia finished on a 21-5 push for the easy win.

Spain roll past Germany

Leonor Rodriguez scored 19 points and Marta Xargay collected a double-double in guiding Spain to a 79-43 victory over Germany to improve to 2-0.

Xargay had 13 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and five steals while Vega Gimeno chipped in 11 points for Spain, who out-rebounded Germany 66-27 but committed 28 turnovers.

Svenja Brunckhorst tallied 11 points for Germany, who dropped to 0-2.

Spain did not waste any time in jumping all over the Germans with an 11-0 run for a 14-2 lead midway through the first quarter. And the gap was 19-8 after one period.

The Spaniards scored the first nine points of the second quarter and Lucas Mondelo's team increased the lead to 27 points, 48-21 at the break.

Spain put the game away for good with a 15-0 surge to start the second half for a 42-point advantage, which was 67-27 after three periods.

Germany scratched to within 34 points early in the fourth quarter but Spain's defense never let up.
