Russia Bounce Back, Hold Off Poland


Six players scored in double figures to help Russia snap a two-game losing streak with a 75-62 victory over Poland in the qualifying round Group E at the U20 European Championship for Women.

Anna Ostroukhova scored 10 of her 15 points in the fourth quarter while Anastasiya Shilova, Veronika Dorosheva and Anastasia Loginova each had 12 points for Russia, who improved to 3-1 in the group.

Anastasia Logunova added 11 points and Tatiana Petrushina chipped in 10 points in the victory.

Olivia Tomialowicz tallied 17 points for Poland, who dropped to 1-3 in the group but still have chances to reach the quarter-finals. Magda Kaczmarska added 12 points in the loss.

Russia jumped ahead early and had a six-point lead in the first quarter, which was down to 21-18 after one period.

The Russians used a 6-0 run to build a 30-20 advantage. But Poland's 9-0 answer made it a one-point game. Still, Russia were ahead 38-34 at the break.

Poland stayed close throughout the third quarter and trailed just 53-51 going into the fourth period.

Russia eventually wore down Poland and increased the lead to as many 15 points in the final frame for the victory.
