By David HeinOlesia Malashenko and Alina Iagupova combined for 41 points as Ukraine booked the final spot for the quarter-finals - a date with Spain - by knocking off Poland 67-50 at the U20 European Championship for Women.
Malashenko had 20 points and 14 rebounds while Iagupova collected 21 points, nine rebounds, six assists and five steals in helping Ukraine finish fourth in the qualifying round Group E with a 2-3 record. Olga Maznichenko chipped in 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
Poland could have reached the quarters with a victory but dropped to 1-4 in the group. Joanna Markiewicz had 10 points and Malgorzata Misiuk collected nine points and 13 rebounds in the loss.
Ukraine jumped ahead early with a 13-0 run spanning the first and second quarters for a double digit lead, 17-7. And an 8-0 spurt in the second period increased the advantage to 16 points before Poland trailed 35-22 at the break.
The Poles trimmed the deficit to just six points midway through the third period with a 13-3 run. But Ukraine re-established a 10-point lead, 52-42 going into the fourth quarter.
And the advantage grew to 19 points with less than five minutes to play.
