Romania, Germany Earn First Wins
Romania and Germany bagged comfortable victories to start the relegation round of the U20 European Championship Women.
Cristina Bigica and Gabriela Munteanu combined for 46 points in leading Romania to an 80-51 win over Bulgaria, while Anna-Lisa Rexroth had 23 points and Stephanie Wagner added 18 in Germany's 84-57 victory over Sweden.
Bigica had 22 points and nine rebounds and Munteanu collected 24 points and six rebounds as Romania improved to 1-0. Elisabeth Pavel added 14 points and nine rebounds and Maria Manta chipped in 11 points, two steals and three blocks in the victory.
Aleksandra Kancheva scored 13 points in the loss for Bulgaria, who dropped to 1-0.
Romania jumped ahead by 13 points in the first quarter and used a 9-0 run for a 19-point lead in the second quarter.
The Romanian cushion was down to 10 points late in the third period, but they put away Bulgaria in the fourth with a 23-4 run to build a 75-43 advantage late.
In the other relegation round showdown, Germany opened an eight-point gap in the first quarter and built it to 15 points with an 8-0 run in the second.
Germany were just too much for Sweden in the second half, continually extending the gap as the Swedes did not have an answer.
Danielle Hamilton scored 18 points for Sweden while Frida Fodgemark added 12 points and 11 rebounds and Stefanie Yderstrom chipped in 10 points in the loss.
