Russia End Lithuania Hopes

15.07.2009

Russia ended Lithuania's hopes of advancing to the Quarter-Finals of the U20 European Championship Women 2009 with a dominating 85-62 victory.

Aleksandr Kovalev's squad shared the scoring load.  Nine players tallied five of more points apiece.

But, once again, power forward Nadezda Grishaeva paced her team with 16 points to go with 6 rebounds.

Even though they could do little to stop Lithuania's Gintare Petronyte, they held her team to just 38% shooting and caused them to cough up the ball 23 times.

Petronyte ends the tournament with another incredible game.  The center had game highs in points (21), rebounds (13) and assists (4).

Lithuania actually pulled ahead by one point (13-12) early in the first period and was only down three points (19-16) going into the second.

But Grishaeva was there to score back-to-back field goals to reclaim the lead for good.

A jumper by Natalia Vieru at the midway point in the second quarter game capped a 14-1 for Russia run that put the game out of reach.

Russia now wait to see the result of the France-Latvia game to find out their rival for the Quarter-Finals.
