Malta Grind Out Division C Win At Armenia

03.07.2010

Malta stayed on top of the European Championship for Women Division C with a 74-65 victory over Armenia.

Josephine Grima had 22 points to lead the winners, who overcame a 28-point game from Armenia guard Christina Kepenekian.

Malta opened up a 15-point lead - their biggest of the contest - early in the second half but Armenia, cheered on by their fans, battled and closed to 45-44 on one of Kepenekian's six three-pointers.

Twice more in the quarter, Armenia pulled to win one - each time thanks to Arpine Amirkanyan lay-ups.

But Malta kept their noses in front and went to the fourth quarter leading 56-52 following a basket from Grima.

Armenia never allowed their opponents to get comfortable, and it was another Kepenekian three-ball that cut Malta's advantage to 62-59 with 4:18 remaining.

Rebecca Thoresen and Grima lay-ups pushed the Malta lead to 66-59 and Armenia got no closer than five points the rest of the way.

While Malta did most of their damage inside the arc, making 24 of 56 shots, Armenia put up 28 attempts from three-point range and drilled nine.

Amanda Jackson helped Armenia stay in the game with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Thoresen finished with 13 points and 13 boards.

Ashleigh Vella also had a strong all-round game with 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

Malta won all four of their games at the event, following on from their 5-0 success in 2008 when they defeated Albania in the final.
