|Martins Meiers was instrumental under the hoops for BK Ventspils on Tuesday night|
It was third time lucky for BK Ventspils in Group I of the EuroChallenge Last 16 as their first victory came in dominant fashion, a 96-64 rout of Gaz Metan Medias.
Having lost their opening two games at this stage of the competition, Ventspils ensured there would be no three-peat as they took control early and just kept on going.
They broke the game open with a 15-2 run in the first quarter that saw them go 19-7 up on Martins Meiers' free throws with four minutes left in the opening quarter.
A 10-0 run that continued on into the second period saw them move 34-16 clear on Akselis Vairogs' three-pointer, and another little burst had them 52-33 clear at half-time following Martins Laksa's jump-shot.
There was no let off in the second half, and a 10-0 run capped by Vairogs' lay-up made it 72-45.
Their biggest lead came two minutes from the finish when Ronalds Zakis' free throws made it 94-56.
Meiers and Folarin Campbell had 14 points each to lead Ventspils while Sandis Valters had 13, Laksa 12 and Vairogs 10.
Kyle Shiloh led the visitors with 14 points, with Rares Mandache adding 12.
The result leaves both teams with 1-2 records in the group.
