Panionios Hit Back to Beat Ural Great
// 14 November 2006

Greek high-flyers Panionios trailed by as many as 14 points in the second quarter but fought back to claim an impressive 77-70 win at Ural Great on Tuesday night in the EuroCup.

Kennedy Winston poured in 21 points as the visitors prevailed.

Ural Great won their opening game in the competition last week against PBC CSKA Sofia and they got off to a fast start on Tuesday at the Molot Sports Hall, storming out to a 9-0 lead.

Rimas Kurtinaitis, a former Lithuanian international player who was on the famous national team that stole so many headlines at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, has taken the reins of Ural Great this season and they are playing with a lot of confidence under his guidance.

When Stanislav Makshantsev made a pair of free throws late in the first quarter, Ural Great enjoyed a 23-12 advantage.

Andre Hutson's basket cut the deficit to 26-18 early in the second period for Panionios, but Makshantsev replied with a jump shot and then a lay-up to stretch the lead to 30-18.

When Makshantsev, who would finish with 10 points, hit another jumper with just under six minutes to play in the first half, Ural Great surged into their biggest lead of the clash at 34-20.

Panionios then began to assert themselves.

They closed the quarter on a 17-7 run, with Hutson accounting for eight of those points, to trail just 41-37 at half-time.

Ural Great, now under great pressure, managed to stay even with their opponents until 1:36 was left in the third quarter when Winston sank a pair of free throws for a 56-54 lead.

The Greeks stayed in front the rest of the way but did not pull away until the final five minutes.

Aleksandr Belov made a three-pointer with 7:06 to play in the game to make it 61-60, but a Winston scoring spree put the game away.

After Vladislav Dragojlovic's lay-up, Winston hit a jump shot, then a pair of lay-ups - the second on which he was fouled and he made the free throw for a three-point play.

Winston capped off the spurt with another jumper and the lead was 72-60.

The mountain was too high to climb for Ural Great.

Hutson had 12 points and six rebounds, and Panagiotis Kafkis added nine points and eight rebounds.

Panionios were six of 14 (42.9%) from three-point range and 24 of 42 (58.5%) inside the arc.

Derrick Tarver scored 15 points and came up with three steals for Ural Great, who were eight of 22 (36.4%) from long range and a perfect 14 of 14 (100%) from the charity stripe.

They also shot well inside the arc, making 16 of 28 (57.1%), but still lost.

Panionios, who beat Türk Telekom in their first EuroCup game, improved to 2-0 to top Group G.
