Every year, Konstantinos Kaimakoglou gets better as a basketball player. The 26-year-old did well enough last season to make Greece's EuroBasket squad and helped Jonas Kazlauskas' team win a bronze medal, and the Maroussi man is doing everything he can to earn a spot in this year's team for the FIBA World Championship in Turkey. He has been named Player of the Month for January in Greece's domestic league after receiving a total of 78 votes, almost double that of Panionios' Serbia international Zoran Erceg (41pts), who finished second. "This January was a very difficult month because it included critical games with difficult opponents," Kaimakoglou said. "We are very pleased that we managed to win them all. Also, I am glad I helped as much as I could. The success is down to teamwork, though." Maroussi beat Kolossos, Olympia Larissa, Panellinios, Aris and Kavala. In the 77-68 win over Kavala, Kaimakoglou had 20 points and eight rebounds. Third-place Maroussi improved to 12-2 and remained firmly in the regular-season title race behind Olympiacos and Panathinaikos (both 13-1). The Reds and Greens had better not take Maroussi lightly, either. "We enter the court to beat anyone, regardless of the name," Kaimakoglou warned. Olympiacos had three players - Linas Kleiza, Josh Childress and Milos Teodosic - in the top five of the voting. Lithuania international Kleiza (20pts), American Childress (17) and Serbia international Teodosic (8) were third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Third-two media outlets took part in the voting. Teodosic, meanwhile, was voted Euroleague Player of the Month for January. |
