|Kyle Weems stole the show for Telekom Baskets on Wednesday night, ending the game with 34 points|
Kyle Weems has knocked down a season-high 34 points, leading hosts Telekom Baskets to an 85-72 victory over EuroChallenge Group L rivals Okapi Aalstar.
Going at 14-for-17 from the floor, Weems turned a potentially sticky situation at the half into one-way traffic in the third quarter, scoring 17 points in the frame to earn himself a break for the final phases of the game.
With both teams coming into the confrontation carrying 1-2 records, the winner was guaranteed to go second in Group L behind undefeated EWE Baskets Oldenburg.
Playing without multiple key players, a number of Aalst players were stepping out of the shadows to keep the visitors in the game in the first half, none more so than former Belgian age-grade player Arne Steinbach who had already amassed a season-best 13 points and six assists by halftime.
However the up-and-coming playmaker was isolated in the second half and could not add further to his tally.
With Ioana Tofi providing the supporting role for Steinbach, the understrength Belgians took a surprise 41-40 lead into the halftime break.
Tofi went on to top scoring for Aalst with 18 points.
However, the dynamics of the game changed in the second half, as Telekom Baskets, led by Weems, played with renewed vigour in the third stanza, developing a healthy nine-point lead by the start of the final frame.
Okapi's wings had been clipped and they showed no signs of coming back in the last 10 minutes as Telekom Baskets cruised to a comfortable victory.
Providing the key support for Weems was fellow American Robert Vaden, who ended the night with 15 points and six assists.
