Ernests Kalve made sure that Szolnoki Olaj prolonged their run in the EuroChallenge
Ernests Kalve carried Szolnoki Olaj to a 77-71 victory over BC Timisoara as they snatched second place in Group F and a place in the Last 16 of the EuroChallenge.
With Kormend suffering a heavy defeat at home to EWE Baskets, Szolnoki made up for last week's defeat to the Hungarians by holding on to top Timisoara and advance.
And they did it behind a huge night from Kalve, who shot 10-of-14 from the paint and added three three-pointers en route to 32 points.
It had looked like they were going to make victory on the night look easy as they dominated the first quarter 25-8, but Timisoara then outscored them by 14 in the second quarter to set up a tense second half.
Szolnoki were outstanding in the first period, and after scoring the final seven points they led 25-8 on Kalve's emphatic dunk, giving the big man 11 points in the opening 10 minutes alone.
But Timisoara were not going to make it so easy and they scored the opening 10 points of the second period to close back to within seven on Bogdan Popescu's lay-up.
The gap was 33-31 when Zlatko Jovanovic hit a lay-up and was 40-37 at the break after Delvon Johnson got the tip-in from Marko Derasimovic's miss.
Derasimovic then hit the opening points of the third period as Timisoara made it a one-point game, but they could not get on level terms as Szolnoki instead built a small lead that would hold until the final buzzer.
Marton Fodor's three put them up 58-50 late in the third period and Miklos Szabo's hook shot made it a double-digit lead, 64-54, early in the fourth as they built the cushion they needed.
Marton Bader finished with 14 points for Szolnoki.
Jovanovic led Timisoara with 20 points and nine rebounds, while Derasimovic scored 12 points and Johnson and Dominique Archie had 11 each.
