Olin Edirne at last won a game in the EuroChallenge with a 92-86 triumph over Okapi Aalstar on Wednesday evening.
With no chance of progressing to the Last 16, the Turkish club made sure they wouldn't go through the entire competition without giving their fans a taste of victory.
After blowing a 16-point lead early in the second quarter and going to the fourth down by four, Edirne rediscovered their best form.
Trailing 77-76 with 5:27 to play, Edirne got two free-throws from Vladimir Stimac and a basket from Christopher Wright to go in front to stay.
Recent signing Filip Videnov helped them clinch victory when hitting a three-ball with 4:07 to go for an 83-79 advantage.
When Okapi closed the gap to 86-83 just 1:39 from the end, the Belgian club fouled Stimac and he went to the line and made two free-throws.
Stimac finished with a game-high 35 points while Christopher Copeland scored 29 in defeat.
Stefan Jackson also had a big game for Okapi with 18 points and 12 boards.
While Edirne improved to 1-4, Okapi fell to 2-3.
Because of their win against ETHA Engomi (3-2) last month, a victory next week at ETHA in Cyprus would be enough to see the Aalst club through to the Last 16.
Olin Edirne point guard Chris Wright:
"We started the game really good than lead by 15 points. Begining of the second half we seem like going down but we find the points from free throws. Stimac Had a great game today. Also our new transfer Videnov is really experienced player. He shows his quality today. We are happy for beating a good team.
Edirne Coach Ali Burgul:
"It is hard to take control after a successfull coach Gokhan Tastimur but in a short while we focused on the game and we won this important game. The game is important because we need to delevop our basketball. Its seems like 86 points is too much for us but Okapi is going to qualify to the second round if they beat Etha next week. We won against a good team."
Okapi head coach Bradley Dean:
"First of all I want to congratulate Olin Edirne. Generally Coach changes gives possitive effects to the teams. We had a big men problem. Stimac had a really good game. We have one injured big man and after that we had a foul trouble. At the end of the game Olin scores the free-throws and we didnt make the best selecitons on offence and they won."
Okapi player Ruben Luyten:
"We didnt succumbed against Stimac. Our big man was injured and its hard to make defence at the inside. At the first half Olin made their open shots and they lead by 15. In the third period we fought and made a come back. But at the end of the game Olin won."
