EWE Baskets Oldenburg clinched a win away from home at Bemaco SPU Nitra on the opening day of the EuroChallenge Regular Season.
Adam Chubb led the way with 23 points and Robert Brown scored 22 as the German club prevailed on Tuesday, 77-72.
Nitra trailed early on but gave their fans hope of a victory when Ater Majok capped a 12-0 run with two free-throws to tie the game at 38-38 late in the first half.
Brown sank three of four free-throw attempts at the end of the second quarter to give the visitors a 41-38 lead.
After going in front by nine and seeing that whittled to just a two-point advantage, the German outfit again seemed to take control with a Brown put-back leaving them on top, 61-55, with 10 minutes remaining.
Nitra three times reduced the arrears to four points in the fourth quarter but EWE Baskets protected their lead and ended up winning by five.
Puerto Rican point guard Denis Clemente had a game-high 29 points in defeat.
EWE Baskets Head Coach Predrag Krunič:
"I expected a good game. Nitra has a good mix of Slovak and foreign players. It won't be easy for any team to win here, but we played good defense and it's always important in the EuroChallenge to win the first game."
Oldenburg Center Adam Chubb:
"We had problems on defense so far this season, so our big focus was to come out and play good defense. Defense must be first and everything will come then."
Nitra Head Coach Ľubomír Urban:
"I would like to congratulate our opponent. The difference was that we didn't rebound the ball very well, especially under our basket. But anyway, we did a good job and played a good game against a very strong team."
Nitra Point Guard Denis Clemente:
"I hate losing, so I am disappointed. We did a pretty good job. We have to prepare for the next games and get better in one week. We couldn't tie the game because we weren't making open shots. The German team played hard for 40 minutes and that's why they take the win. It was first game for everybody (in Nitra), so we have to get used to the level and we will get better."
