No-one expected in 2005, when Loukas Mavrokefalidis was helping Greece to clinch the silver medal at the U21 World Championship with some stellar performances, that he would make his debut with the senior national team at the age of 29. The reasons that prevented this long-awaited first from materialising earlier are now water under the bridge and the powerful center with the enormous shoulders has not stopped working and evolving as a player at club level in the meantime. Greece will finally have in Mavrokefalidis a rock-solid presence on the glass as well as a big man with a reliable mid-range shot. He arrives in Slovenia after an excellent and particularly hectic season, as he was Spartak's top scorer and rebounder in both the VTB United league and the Eurocup and later joined Barcelona in the Spanish Liga Endesa play-offs, where he made an excellent contribution.
