GAME REPORT

Mons Thrash Trefl Sopot To Earn EuroChallenge Spot

Dexia Mons-Hainaut travelled to Poland on Tuesday night and won convincingly over Trefl Sopot to seal their place in the EuroChallenge.

Carrying a three-point advantage from last week's opening leg in Belgium, Arik Shivek's side rolled to a 73-55 victory in Sopot.

Marcus Hatten had 17 points and five rebounds for the winners, while Dexia got a huge lift from Benjamin McCauley who finished with 12 points and 12 boards.

Dexia took a stranglehold on the tie in the first seven minutes of the first quarter, holding Sopot to just six points while pouring in 22 themselves.

Netherlands international center Peter van Paassen and Ronald Lewis each had seven points in the early run.

The aggregate lead ballooned to 24 when Lewis dunked in transition with 3:53 remaining in the first half.

Sopot trailed in the second leg 49-31 at half-time and weren't able to put the visitors under pressure after the break.

Lewis, 26, led the Dexia defensive effort by coming up with five of their 11 steals.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Trefl Sopot vs. Dexia Mons-Hainaut

Arik Shivek, Dexia Mons-Hainaut head coach:
In Mons we started the game more or less the same as we started here. The main difference between these two games is the consistent way that we did it. We controlled much better the boards. We didn't let them get rebounds on the offensive end. We had a great first half, when good defence let us score easy points from the fast breaks. When you lead by 18 points in the first half it is hard to maintain on the same level, but we managed to do it.

Karlis Muiznieks, Trefl Sopot head coach:
We are still a young team and we are still developing. I think my players were very nervous and we made too many mistakes both in offence and defence. Sometimes I didn't understand it, because they played different than in training and in friendly games. In the second half we took too many shots from the three point line, but of course it was open shots and when you play in your gym you should get advantage from it.

Ben McCauley, Dexia Mons-Hainaut player:
We knew where we are going and that it will be a hard game for us. We said before the game that we will do whatever we will have to do to win. That is why we made some serious preperation for this game. We practiced really hard this week and we were prepared really good. The first game helped us to be better this time.

Marcin Stefański, Trefl Sopot player:
We had three main problems during this game. First of all, it is hard to even think about the win when you let your opponents score 49 points in one half in your gym. Second problem was too many turnovers. Finally we had only nine free throws during this game, while our opponents had 28. I wish Dexia the best in the EuroChallenge competition.
