BK Prostejov came away from Helios Domzale's home court with a 70-62 win in the first leg of the Eurochallenge Qualifying Round in Slovakia on Wednesday.
Prostejov was led by Andrius Slezas, who scored a game-high 20 points, and Kyle Landry, who pulled in a game-high 18 rebounds to go with 15 points. Eugene Lawrence chipped in with 11 points of his own.
Drazen Bubnic tallied 15 points for Helios, while Grega Mali and Vlado Pasalic scored 10 and 8 points, respectively.
Benas Veikalas capped a high-scoring first quarter for the visitors with a three-pointer to send them into the second quarter up 26-18.
Prostejov extended the gap to 11 points (37-26) under two minutes before halftime, but Helios closed to 39-32 before the break.
The visitors opened the second half with a decisive 18-2 (57-39) run capped with a three-pointer by Slezas with under five to play in the third.
Helios responded with a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to 10 points (59-49) in the early minutes of the final period and give them a shooting chance in the second game in the Czech Republic on October 6.
BK Prostejov player Kyle Landry
"We expected the game to be tough, because they are really a very good team. Since this is a qualifying game, every point matters, so they played hard to the end. I think we lost it a bit at the end, we stopped playing our game and due to that we are a bit disappointed. But I think the best way to qualify is to win both games, so hopefully we will win again at home."
BK Prostejov head coach Peter Balint
"This was a very tough game, because Domžale were down twenty points and still played hard in defense. We played good defense for thirty-five minutes, then we lost concentration at the end and missed four free-throws and a layup. We could win for maybe fifteen points, but the margin at the end is eight points, which means that we will have another tough game in Prostejov."
KK Helios Domzale player Grega Mali
"I think we did our best. We fought to the end. But unfortunately they were better in rebounds and they went ahead for like twenty points, and it is hard to get back from that. We got to minus eight, which is pretty good seeing what was happening on the court. We will do everything to try to win the away game. If we play and fight the whole game like we did here in the last fifteen minutes, we can believe in our success."
KK Helios Domzale head coach Radovan Trifunovic
"We have a young team and because of that we started the game a bit scared. If we played the whole game like we played in the last fifteen minutes, I am certain the game would be ours. I am glad that we got relaxed a bit during the game, so we know we have some reserves for the next game. In Prostejov we will try to start the game more relaxed, but we have to go for all or nothing, because now we have nothing to loose. Prostejov is good and tough team and almost the same players are now together for two, three seasons. They patiently wait for the opponents' mistakes and the only way to beat them is to attack them even harder and stronger."
