CSA Steaua defeated BC Kyiv 77-59 in the first leg of the Eurochallenge Qualifying Round in Romania on Wednesday.
Jerome Coleman had a game-high 17 points to lead CSA to the win. Darryl Jackson chipped in with 15 points and Virgil Stanescu notched 14 more.
Kyiv's Vitaliy Kovalenko scored 14 points, while Dmytro Briantsev added 13.
CSA Steaua started out strong and a jumper by Coleman gave his team a 21-12 late in the first quarter.
Hristo Nikolov and Rares Mandache hit back-to-back three-pointers to grab a 15-point lead (37-23) for CSA with under three and a half to play in the second quarter.
Another CSA triple, this one work of Coleman, sent CSA into the third quarter up 42-27.
A jumper by Oleksandr Tishchenko pulled Kyiv to within 50-37 mid-way through the third, but CSA went on a 12-point run (62-37) capped by a jump-shot by Dumitru Carutasu at the beginning of the fourth period.
The home squad went on to guarantee its point margin for the second match on October 6 in Ukraine.
