Spartak Saint-Petersburg are one victory away from playing in the EuroChallenge Final Four after beating Pinar Karsiyaka on Tuesday.

The Russian Cup champions broke open a close contest late in the first half and clinched a 78-73 victory.

They will attempt to seal their progression to the last four on Thursday in Izmir, Turkey, when Game 2 of the Quarter-Final series is played.

Karsiyaka had a 31-29 lead following a basket by Birkan Batuk.

Petar Popovic then reeled off five unanswered points to ignite a 15-6 Spartak run over the last 4:08 of the second quarter.

Popovic had 11 of his 15 points in the first half and Patrick Beverley scored 13 of his 15 before the break.

Ahmet Erdogan scored five points in a late 7-0 run that saw Karsiyaka trim the deficit to 73-68 with 28 seconds to go.

Karsiyaka then fouled Aleksey Kotishevskiy and the 1.96m forward made just one of two free-throws, but Erdogan went to the other end and missed from long range.

The last 15 seconds saw Spartak briefly lose their poise as Alper Saruhan intercepted a pass by Alexander Korchagin and went in for a lay-up to reduce the arrears to 74-70.

Karsiyaka put Kotishevskiy back on the free-throw line and this time, he made both attempts to stretch the lead back to 76-70.

When Aleksey Zozulin intercepted a pass and fed Vladimir Dyachok for a dunk, victory was assured for Spartak.

Andre Smith finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds in defeat.

Karsiyaka hit just four of 23 attempts from behind the arc and turned the ball over 13 times.

Nikola Dragovic had a game-high three steals to go with his six points for Spartak, who had just seven turnovers themselves.
