GAME REPORT

Ventspils Win On Road At Khimik

Rashad Anderson exploded for 27 points on his EuroChallenge debut to fire BK Ventspils to an 82-71 victory at Khimik in Ukraine.

The visitors from Latvia trailed 37-34 at half-time with lightning-quick point guard Curtis Millage's 12 points leading the home side.

Ventspils took the lead for good three minutes into the second half when playmaker Janis Strelnieks hit a trey for a 44-42 advantage.

With Anderson scoring at will - his jumper took the advantage to 62-54 at the end of the third quarter and increased his points haul to 19 - Ventspils kept their noses in front.

Khimik kept the pressure on until the end, though.

Toni Bizaca's shot from the arc gave the home side hope, cutting the Ventspils lead to 65-62, but after Millage missed a lay-up that could have pulled Khimik closer, Ventspils counter-attacked and Anderson drilled a three-pointer to take the lead back to six.

Ventspils remained comfortably ahead the rest of the way.

Saulius Kuzminskas also had a big game for the winners, scoring 15 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.

Millage, Travis Garrison and Bizaca scored 13 apiece in defeat.

Millage finished an assist shy of a double-double.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Khimik Yuzhny vs. BK Ventspils

Khimik Player Travis Garrison:
"We planned to win this game, to play hard both in defense and offense, to fight for every rebound. We accomplished it in the first quarter but the rest of the game was not so successful for us. We didn't play hard enough. We had a problem with rebounds. So that's why we lost this game."

Khimik Head Coach Vitaly Usenko:
"I would like to say that even in the first quarter we didn't accomplished everything what I planned. We knew that BK Ventspils had a problem with center players and we planned to make them foul but my players could not do that. We lost rebounds. Before the game they had a desire to fight and to win. This game was the worst game this year. It seemed like my players were scared. And I'm not happy with this game."

Ventspils Player Akselis Vairogs:
"This was the first game away and it was very important for us to win it. We were very worried about it. That's why the first quarter was not so successful. But we started playing aggressive in the second quarter. We won the rebound. I think that our team was fighting today and it's helped us to win."

Ventspils Head Coach Algirts Brazis:
"We were examining games of BC Khimik to try to know their game better. I would like to say that today my team was psychologically better because BC Khimik as we know is on the last place in the Ukrainian Championship and it's hard for them. I can't say my team played a wonderful game today but it was enough for us to win because BC Khimik was not ready yet. I believe that later they'll do better. Right now the most important for us is that we won this game."
